Gear Roundup
I've picked up some new gear lately, and wanted to give some reports on what works, what doesn't, and why I picked some of the stuff.
1. Laptop Backpack by Swissgear- Sunday was a hard day for ComAir, and when I boarded my Knoxville-Cincinnati flight, the flight attendant very firmly refused to let me bring aboard my rolling computer case. Mind you, this bag (and another like it) has flown 100k miles underneath Coach and 1st class seats on just about every major domestic airline. That was it. The second bag was falling apart- the result of a spat that the bag had with a recalcitrant escalator, and the first one met its end after some zipper incontinence with some gadgets. The good news: they were both cheap, so I'm not out much.
I've been intrigued by the Swissgear gray laptop backpacks I've seen around. They not only hold a lot, and look comfortable (they are), but they also appear to be built to take a lot of abuse from road warriors like me. I'm about half way through the inagural trip with this bag, and so far it is as advertised. I especially like how the bag has lots of padding, shock-absorbing shoulder straps, lots of pockets, zippers, and places for things like a bottle of water (as if you could carry that on the plane today).
2. Neoprene Sleeve for Notebook PC- This is a foam rubber case that fits snugly around the laptop and zips up to give the laptop some protection when you're carrying it by itself after pulling it out of your cool laptop backpack. Be careful when purchasing, however- these cases come in a lot of sizes, and the fit is really important. Too tight, and the notebook will look like a sausage in a casing. Too loose, and the neoprene won't give any protection. Fortunately, I took both laptops to J&R's NYC electronics store with me, and was able to get some that fit just right.
3. Kyocera KR-1 wireless router for EVDO card- This device lets me use my Cardbus EVDO card from Sprint as a WAN port for a wireless network. Very cool.
