So I woke up this morning in my own bed (a nice change), got up, watched the Hurricane (which BTW reminded me how lucky I really am), and came to the office to get started this morning. The first article I saw was this one, which describes a virus which shipped with one model of Creative MP3 player (note: Although both companies are Creative, this one has nothing to do with the Creative Solutions that makes accounting software).
The shipment of viruses on new MP3 players reminds all of us of the importance of network-based antivirus, local firewalls, and antispyware solutions. Here's what I use (no recommendations here, just information)
- Trend Micro Antivirus (network edition) - I have a server-based (MS SBS2003) antivirus solution for five users for a little over $200, with push updates at login and the related monitoring of all workstations on the network. I love it. (disclosure: I'm registered as a Trend reseller, even though I haven't sold anything for them. It seems to work as well as Symantec, and is more cost-effective)
- Microsoft AntiSpyware - Seems to keep me clean - it's free, and my friends at K2 echo the positive reviews of this product.
- Firewall - I have used Zone Alarm in the past- am in the process of reformatting and reinstalling everything on my laptop, so am just using the Windows firewall right now.
I am also running Win XP Pro on the workstations, and am really liking the shared security profiles - makes the machines connected to my network more safe.
