Talked to Act! a few days ago - and purchased their recommended solution to my woes, Companionlink Pro ($90). It does a pretty good job - I've got some duplicates in my database now - but overall, I'm pleased.
I also mentioned my frustration with Act! for Palm and its incompatibility with both Palm OS 5.4 (garnet) and Act! 2005. The person I talked to led me to believe that this will be fixed in about six months. I really miss my Act for Palm - it made a huge difference for me, and would love to see how it integrates with the phone.
One thing I've noticed is that ACT! and Lacerte both use SQL server to manage their data. This seems to slow the loading of both apps - and these two additions (as well as the addition of McAfee internet security) have slowed down my PC significantly. Will have to look into these problems.
